**** UPDATE June 2012. This Veggie Holic has moved location**Check this link for the new map and directions

Typhoon Kompasu woke me up so early today~ How rude! My sister and I were going to go down to Cheonan, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. Thank goodness I don’t have to commute to work. I’m content to just stay in my cubby hole of an apartment and munch on all the delicious bread that I bought at Veggie Holic yesterday!

I heard about Veggie Holic quite a while ago, but since I don’t go to Hongdae very often, I kept forgetting about it. However, I recently started hearing all sorts of great things about this bakery from a bunch of different sources (including some of you readers!), so yesterday I finally made the pilgrimage to this vegan sanctuary.

Everything is 100% vegan. Dat’s the way, uh huh, uh huh, I like it~ uh huh, uh huh~

IMG_6501
Oh my gahhh. My heart flutters at the sight of so many vegan carb options!

Walnut manjoos

IMG_6504
Three different kinds of morning toast breads (black raspberry, mixed fruit/nuts, and sweet pumpkin).

IMG_6505
It says ‘Blueberry muffins’ but there were also chocolate and sweet pumpkin muffins.

IMG_6507
Chestnut bread and chocolate pound cake.

IMG_6508
Not sure what to call these, but they looked like shortbread sandwiches with candied fruits and nuts in the filling.

IMG_6510
*found out that the cookies with the “Cookie” stickers on them are not vegan. (5/10/10)

IMG_6523
I’ll give you a moment to slurp up that drool from the corner of your mouth~

Oh dear~

The vegan drinks menu. I’m sooo getting the caramel affogato next time. :)

Here are the goods that I splurged on: Bokbunja black raspberry bread (복분자식빵, 5,500 won), a package of biscotti cookies (5,000 won), a chocolate chip muffin (2,000 won), and a sweet pumpkin muffin (2,000 won). The little twisted bread/cake came for free along with the purchase of the loaf of bread. Including a tax fee, I spent a total of 14,500 won! Eeeep! But what is life without a little carb-binging… :) And besides, it’s always a pleasure to support one of the few independent, vegan businesses here in Korea.

IMG_6539
Ofcourse, my sister and I had to immediately give one of the muffins a taste, so we opened the sweet pumpkin one. Love the vegan muffin top!

IMG_6547
This was a little on the denser side (similar to pound cake) and it was delicious. It wasn’t sickeningly sweet and I especially loved the nuts and sweet pumpkin chunks.

Everything got neatly packed in a goodie bag for me to take home. For breakfast this morning, I also had some of the black raspberry bread and the biscotti, both of which are awesome awesome awesome. I can’t wait to take a bite out of the chocolate muffin next!

I was actually most excited to try their vegan soy yogurt, but the lady at the counter said they were all out because the yogurt company was going through some factory/packaging changes. Bummerrr~~~! She felt really bad about it, but assured me that they will have them back in stock by mid-September. I guess that just gives me another reason to revisit Veggie Holic in a few weeks (not that I need much more convincing anyway). You can also order their products through their website, which I might actually do for their yogurt when it becomes available.

  1. Wow that place looks amazing! I could probably get a little carried away there.^^ The black raspberry bread is particularly intriguing…too bad about the soy yogurt… Anyway YAY for supporting vegan businesses!

  2. HAHA! I think I know why all the yogurt is sold out! My boyfriend and I bought almost all of it on Saturday. :( I still have a bunch of it sitting in my fridge. It tastes really "beany." I suppose that's the best way to put it. It was really good in a smoothy for thickness, but by itself it's kinda "meh." I was dying to get some, though because I have so many cake recipes that call for soy yogurt that I haven't been able to make because I could never find it here. As soon as I find the time, I'm going to play around with them.
I've ordered a yogurt maker so I don't have it truck it to Hongdae every week or so to have yogurt. I'm not sure if it has the active cultures required to make more yogurt from it, but I can let you know how it turns out when I attempt it or get someone to read the label for me.

  3. so jealous! ^^

  4. OMG. i live 10 minute walk away and i had no idea about this place! gonna check it out in few hours. thank you so so much!

  5. Oh you have no idea how jealous I am right now! Being German, bread is my ultimate weakness. I probably would have some sort of joyful fit upon entering that place, haha. I'm really intrigued by the black raspberry toast and the muffins.

Definitely putting this place on my list for when I visit Seoul :)

  6. Hey guys! The raspberry bread is sooo good~ It's very fruity! And I ate the chocolate chip muffin today- yummmmmy! I couldn't stop eating it. :)

Kia- I'm really curious as to how the soy yogurt will taste. Let me know if you have success with using it as a starter. I've been thinking about trying to make my own yogurt too!

  7. omg, that place looks like a dream come true! More than anything, I miss delicious breads and pastries since cutting out dairy from my diet. I hope they're still there when I visit Seoul in December!

  8. Wow, finally you went there :) Actually I also went to veggie holic the day before yesterday, so it was the same day as your visit, right? I found as well that there weren't any soy yogurt, but I didn't know why. Now it's clear :) Anyway, I'm happy to see you like their vegan bread! :D

  9. the rasberry bread is indeed so goood! so i went there yesterday, also got choco muffin and a banana muffin. the girl there was really nice and friendly, talked with her even though we hardly had a common language. will visit soon again. yay!

  10. this is a first! i checked out this place with a friend over the weekend (we traveled up to seoul all the way from geoje!) and it was amazing. it was closed on saturday when we went, but went back the next day and made up for the day lost: spent almost 30,000 on goodies to take home. we tried the chocolate muffin, some chocolate cookies, grabbed a few pastries and had delicious cafe lattes.

the sweet potato bread was also delicious with some tofu-egg salad.

thanks so much for all of the amazing suggestions!

  11. Holy crap! That is amazing!

  12. Those "Please enjoy with tea and coffee" cookies are not vegan :( Don´t understand why they didn´t tell when I was buying them last week :(

  13. What! Are you sure? How do you know?

  14. Woman who works there told me today :(

  15. wow, what a bummer! I thought everything there was vegan…. ugh. Thanks for the info.

  16. OMG, I just stopped by Veggie Holic and the place was being torn up! :-(
