Alien's Day Out

A doggie illustration, an interview, and food!

Things have been busier than normal lately, but in a good way. I’ve mostly just been baking a lot (for the bake shop, Botton Cafe, and also High Street Market), but I’ve also had some pretty cool non-baking related things going on on the side, and even a small illustration commission. KARA (Korea Animal Rights Advocates) is a non profit animal rights group here that is doing a lot of great things to spread compassion towards animals and they asked if I would do an illustration for them to use in their anti dog meat campaign that happened last week. Here’s the original illustration that I did:

They ended up printing t shirts with it and the grey shades got lost in the printing process so it doesn’t look as good as I was hoping. But either way I’m glad I got to help them out with some doodles. And now I have a free tshirt!^^

And then earlier this week, I went to TBS eFM 101.3  for an interview with Ahn Jung Hyun on her 1013 Main Street radio show. She is a really well-known radio personality and TV host here in Korea, and on top of all that, she was the former presenter for the Pyeongchang Olympic Bidding Committee and the main host for the B20 Seoul Summit last year! I’ve known about her for ages (ever since high school?), so it was pretty cool to be in the same room as her. :) I was definitely nervous to be chatting with her on LIVE radio, even though it was for less than 20 minutes. I actually did a similar interview with her last year over the phone, but this was the first time meeting her in person. The broadcast was live and they don’t save old shows on their website so you can’t listen to it, but we just talked about what it means to be vegan, what it’s like to be vegan here in Korea, and what kinds of foods I eat, etc. I totally would’ve gotten a picture of the whole thing, but the day before, I had left my iphone in Cheonan by accident and my camera is in repair at the moment, so I was totally phone and camera-less! Bahhhh. Oh well. Perhaps next time. I did get to give her a loaf of vegan pumpkin bread though! hahaha. Just spreading some vegan love….

Speaking of interviews, here’s a written interview I did almost a month ago with Tamara from the Traveling Natural blog. She wrote so many nice things about me!! *sheepish grin* Anyway, I meant to share the link earlier, but forgot about it until now! Better late than never? Thanks Tamara!

And now onto some random eats!

IMG_4798.jpg
Icy smoothie for breakfast~~ I think this one had frozen plums, banana, wheat grass, chia seeds, almond milk, and lots of ice cubes. Just what I needed to cool myself down, even in the morning. It’s so hot, humid and gross here!! I start melting even after 5 minutes outside, not even joking.

Green Monster!! (bananas, lettuce, wheat grass powder, almond milk, yadda yaddaa ya….. )

IMG_4666.jpgRandom salad with black bean veggie sausages that I got at one of the loving hut locations.

IMG_4816.jpgI think it was all the traveling last month or something, but all I want to eat these days is goooood Korean food. I’ve been eating most of my meals at home and my cooking unfortunately does not qualify as real comforting Korean food. So needless to say, I’ve been craving bab and banchan. My mom’s bab and banchan to be specific.

Lucky for me my parents actually live in Korea so I made a long overdue trip down to Cheonan over the weekend. I love getting away from Seoul and I needed it more than anything because I felt completely exhausted after last week.

IMG_4828.jpgBreakfast in Cheonan: fruit, whole wheat bread, lentil soup, pb & jam…

Dinner at Garobee: rice, veggie bulgogi, jeon pancakes, tater tots, kkong katsu, mushrooms, kimchi. Every time I see tater tots, I think of Napoleon Dynamite.*UPDATE March 11, 2014*** GAROBEE has closed. :(:(:(

I think this was plate #2.

IMG_4907.jpgDessert bowl of watermelon, nuts, ddeok, and sweet bean cubes.

Here is my latest iHerb order! From top left to bottom right: Sea salt (fleur de sel), ghiradelli chocolate chips, Tom’s of Maine toothpaste, white chia seeds, organic lemon extract, organic and fair trade coffee grounds, Berry energy tea sugar free drink sticks. I’ve been averaging about one order each month and the shipping time seems to get quicker with every order! :) Seriously, I can’t even explain how much I love this website.

IMG_4738.jpgBurnt my thumb last week on my oven and I got this nice water blister. This happened with my oven mitts on! Clearly my oven mitts are crap. It’s almost all healed now though. :)

Bunny the Fuzzball munching on some grains and pellets. I love love love Bunny’s soft nose, and also the wispy tufts of fur between her ears. She’s sho fluffyyyy! Or as I like to say, “floofy”.

IMG_4054.jpgOk, that’s all for today! Ta ta~~

Feel free to leave a comment!

  1. Bun-bun! I would totally be kissing her right in that little spot with the floof between her ears, all the time. Although I think from what you’ve said, she might not be too into it. Bunnies aren’t as cuddly as they look, right? Anyway, I just wanted to say you’re awesome! You do so much! Too bad some of the gray got lost in your T-shirt design, but it still looks really good.

I was glad to see that the dog-meat campaign is still going on, because lately a couple of K-Tumblr-ers I follow have been talking about it, you know in the way that foreigners do. Very ignorant. Basically, “what’s the difference between lamb and dog?” (in my opinion, none, but I can see they think they’re making a point there), and, worse, “the dogs are specially bred for boshintang!” 1.) no, they’re not, and 2.) what if they were? Do you think that thousands of years of domestication, interactions with humans, and heightened emotional intelligence and sensitivity can be “bred out” such that the dogs have no idea what’s happening to them and don’t care? Gah! Sorry to spout off on your blog. I’d buy a T-shirt if I were in Korea. Thanks for everything you do!

  2. Wonderful illustration. Bummer about the loss of gray, still looks great!
Do you know where can T-shirts be purchased?

Bunny looks lervley and floofy as always.

  3. Where can I buy the tee shirt? I love it!

    • Hi Dana, I just heard back from them and they said that if you want to buy a tshirt, you can write to info@ekara.org with your name, postal address, the size (from S – XXL) and any other necessary information. I guess they will let you know the next steps? :) Thanks for the kind words!

  4. I just re-read my comment above, and I don’t think I meant to sound quite so anti-”foreigner.” I mean, if I lived there I would be one, so hey. That was my shorthand for “expat Tumblr host not as familiar as he/should be about local issues before expressing an opinion in public.” What they’re saying sounds like ill-informed rationalization based on common platitudes, and so it’s frustrating to see those views continue to get a new platform. that’s all.

    • Hey Lu, hm, I haven’t really been following the tumblr discussions so I can’t talk directly about that. But yea, this is a really touchy subject and everyone likes to hold a different opinion, depending on whether they’re omni, vegan, Korean, or foreigner. Like you, I don’t think there’s any difference in a cow, lamb, chicken or dog. They’re all sentient creatures and feel pain. Even though there probably won’t be a ‘cow meat campaign’ any time soon, perhaps this is just one step in the right direction and it will force people to think about what they are eating and the kind of suffering they are contributing to.

Oh, and Bunny doesn’t mind being held… by me. haha. She’s pretty skiddish when any one else tries to pick her up though! :)

  5. Lovely illustrations!! As a Korean myself, it’s terrible how there’s still the custom of eating dogs on Bok-Nals like today. It’s quite shameful, tbh. I hope organizations like KARA will raise more awareness of this heart-breaking issue and encourage ppl to consume less animal products in general.

The food looks great, as usual!

  6. lovely posting!!
